The first of the three trains that will connect the CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) station to the departure and arrival terminals at Guarulhos airport, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, arrived at the site last Friday (15).
The "people mover", as the train that will run on an elevated structure is called, was placed on the track with a crane.
There is still no forecast for the arrival of the other two trains. The link will be 2.7 km long.
The system linking the station to the terminals was initially promised for the first quarter of this year. Then the deadline was moved up to the second semester. Now, Gru Airport, the concessionaire that manages the international airport, says that the project is due to be delivered in 2024.
The aeromobile will have the capacity to transport 2,000 users per hour in each direction
The train consists of two articulated cars weighing 16 tons and will carry up to 200 passengers per trip. However, other configurations are possible. Each departure is estimated to take four minutes.
The work is being carried out by the AeroGRU consortium and includes the construction of a station at each of the airport's three passenger terminals and a station next to the CPTM station.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the process of commissioning, testing and safety certification will now take place.
There are currently two options for getting to Cumbica airport by rail. One is line 13-jade, departing from Engenheiro Goulart station, on the east side of São Paulo, with the first departure at 4am on weekdays, Sundays and public holidays, and at 4.40am on Saturdays, always with boardings until midnight. On weekdays, the intervals between trains vary from 15 to 20 minutes.
The other alternative is the Expresso Aeroporto, which also runs on line 13, from Barra Funda station, on the west side of São Paulo, with boarding every hour from 5am until midnight. In both cases, the fare is R.
The problem is that the airport terminals are about 2.5 km from the CPTM station, forcing users to take one of the free buses provided by GRU Airport to complete the journey.
The installation of the beams, which vary in height from 4 meters to 11 meters, began in 2022, after authorization from the TCU (Federal Court of Auditors). Each one weighs 136 tons and is 30 meters long.
The total cost was estimated last year at R1 million. When then-governor João Doria (now without a party, at the time with the PSDB) announced the start of construction in February 2022, the investment was budgeted at R2 million - the figures were not adjusted for inflation. The payment will be funded by the concessionaire's grant.
At the time of the announcement of the start of construction, Doria said that the disconnection between line 13-jade and Cumbica airport was "bizarre".
"There's no point in public transportation that doesn't take you to the airport. It's so bizarre that it's hard to believe that this was done in the state of São Paulo," Doria said in an interview at the beginning of last year.
The train station near the airport was inaugurated by then governor and current vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (then with the PSDB and now with the PSB) days before he left the Bandeirantes Palace to run for President in 2018, but without reaching Cumbica.
The Aeroporto-Guarulhos station was promised for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was delivered 75 days before the competition, only for Russia in 2018.
