On November 21-24, airport representatives from around the world will discuss aviation industry recovery forecasts and net zero carbon initiatives for a sustainable future for the sector.

Panama, November 20, 2021 – On November 21-24, executives from various airport industry stakeholders will gather in Cancun, Mexico, where ACI-LAC and ACI World will host World Annual General Assembly & Exhibition – WAGA 2021, the industry’s leading annual conference. Under the theme “Runway to Recovery: Reconnecting Aviation for a Sustainable Future”, various aspects of how the world’s airports are overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic and working towards sustainable development and net zero carbon emissions will be discussed. The ACI-LAC/ World Annual General Assembly will also be held on this occasion.

The event’s program includes the participation of more than 60 speakers with extensive experience and industry knowledge, such as leaders from ACI member airports, business partner representatives, and Mexican authorities. The opening ceremony will be attended by Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Carlos Alfonso Moran Moguel, Undersecretary of Transportation of Mexico, as well as Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, Governor of the State of Quintana Roo for the closing ceremony.

“It is of great satisfaction that after two very difficult years we can celebrate the first face-to-face event of ACI and the airport sector in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean in Cancun. It is a pleasure to be in Mexico, a country that has set an example for the rest of the world in its handling of the Covid-19 crisis. Despite the terrible impact of the pandemic on the aviation sector, the industry has been persevering and resilient, and with collaborative efforts has been able to survive with a view to a more sustainable future,” said Dr. Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC.

The meeting will focus on the challenges and initiatives already underway in the airport industry’s sustainable recovery efforts. In this context, panels will address different topics such as the integration of UAS-powered and other alternative fuel aircraft (SAF) at airports; the efficiencies the industry is developing to meet sustainability goals; how new technologies and innovation are emerging to support recovery; the changing needs and expectations of airport customers post-Covid-19; the role of the private sector in airport development at this time; and the economic regulation of the industry.

“We are proud to host this important event in Cancun, Mexico. We are expecting over 300 leaders from the airport and aviation industry as well as regulators and partners,” said ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira. “This is a critical time to meet in person as we continue as a sector on the path to recovery and collectively build a sustainable future. Meeting in person will strengthen the collaboration and determination of both the aviation ecosystem and governments to work together to meet these goals, so we can continue to deliver social and economic benefits to the world.”
