Latin America and Caribbean flying returns to 76% of 2019 levels
New, special report from Airports Council International Latin America and the Caribbean and Cirium reveals
PANAMA, November 2, 2021 – Flight capacity has returned to 76% of pre-pandemic levels for Latin America and the Caribbean, according to a new, special report released today by Airports Council International Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) and Cirium, the aviation data company. Approximately 74% of the capacity is domestic flying and 26% is international. The increase in capacity is also evident in the aircraft returning to service, with a total of 1,667 aircraft in service on September 1, 2021, compared to 1,220 one year prior.
The positive developments for the region are explained in this month’s Airline Insights Special Report. Subsequent findings will be released to all members of the association on a monthly basis.
Aeromexico, LATAM Airlines, Gol, Azul and Volaris account for the top five airlines operating the most seats during the month, compared to 2019 levels.
The top five busiest airports include São Paulo International Airport (GRU), Mexico City International Airport (NEX), Bogota Airport (BOG), Cancun International Airport (CUN) and Viracopos International Airport (VCP).
“ACI-LAC is very excited to present this report in partnership with Cirium, to give all our member airports a perspective on the recovery of the airport industry in the region providing more clarity on the future,” said Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC. “We are sure that the insights will be beneficial for the development of the sector post Covid-19.”.
Each month, the report will draw on the data and analytics from The Cirium Core—Cirium’s foundation containing 300 terabytes of information from over 2,000 data sources—and will help airports gain access to a summary of flight schedules, operations and fleet utilization trends in the region and globally.
“Capacity is returning in Latin America and the Caribbean as the report insights show, however it’s clear that the airlines and airports serving the countries with less travel restrictions have performed better, for example in Mexico, versus those countries which are still recovering such as Argentina,” said Juan Gonzalez, Business Development Manager, LATAM at Cirium.
“This report will help airport members of ACI-LAC monitor the situation, identify trends, draw comparisons and gain better insights, with accurate data and analytics. We are delighted to be an ACI-LAC partner and jointly support the industry on the road to recovery.”
