ACI-LAC President visits Ecuador and strengthens commitments with government authorities
Quito, March 21, 2022 – On the occasion of the visit to Ecuador of the new president of the Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean, ACI-LAC, Ezequiel Barrenechea and the Director General of ACI-LAC, Rafael Echevarne, a meeting with the highest authorities and representatives of air transport in the country was held to discuss the future of the sector.
The meeting was attended by: the Minister of Tourism Niels Olsen; the Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries José Luis Prado; the minister of transport, Marcelo Cabrera; the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority William Birkett; Roberto Salas, Secretary of the Public-Private Associations; the deputy minister of transport José Luis Aguilar; the director of investment and connectivity of the Ministry of Tourism Pablo Galindo; the President of ACI-LAC, Ezequiel Barrenechea, the Director General of ACI-LAC Dr. Rafael Echevarne; the president and CEO of QUIPORT Ramón Miró; the general manager of TAGSA Ángel Córdova; and the general manager of ECOGAL Jorge Rosillo.
Despite the difficult situation that the airport sector has gone through during the pandemic, the representatives of the country’s three (3) airports given in concession, TAGSA, ECOGAL and QUIPORT, highlighted the positive impacts that the airport sector has had on the economy of the country, including relevant data like:
- more than 99% of sales remain within the internal economy,
- 21% of what is sold is paid to the national treasury,
- Creation of new jobs,
- Increased tax collection and attraction of significant foreign investment to create new and maintain current infrastructure.
During the meeting, a number of ideas were exchanged about the challenges and opportunities facing the country’s air transportation.
“We appreciate the participation of the Ecuadorian ministers and high officiales who joined us in this important meeting. For ACI-LAC, it is fundamental to collaborate with the local authorities to work finding solutions to the main challenges of the sector and to highlight the progress that ACI member airports in Ecuador have made in recent years, despite the impact of the pandemic”, highlighted Ezequiel Barrenechea, President of ACI-LAC.
The Directors of the three most important airports in the Ecuador shared their important achievements, becoming a reference in the region for the recognitions obtained. In terms of sustainability, all ACI members in Ecuador are part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme. Guayaquil airport, at level 2 – reduction and with both Quito and Galapagos airports, having achieved the neutrality level, only airports in the region, It is proof of the commitment of these airports to the environment.
Likewise, the three airports are at the forefront in terms of passenger experience, obtaining several awards granted by the ACI Airport Service Quality program (ASQ) like, Best Airport in Latin America (Guayaquil since 2007, Galapagos 2019 and Quito 2020); the Voice of the Costumer Recognition in 2021 (Guayaquil, Galapagos and Quito); and the Customer Experience Accreditation obtained by Quito airport.
