Carrasco Airport becomes the first in the world to implement NaviLens universal accessibility technology
Through an innovative coded system, the technology enables visually impaired passengers and international travelers to navigate the airport independently.

Carrasco International Airport has become the first airport in the world to integrate NaviLens universal accessibility technology into its wayfinding system and real-time flight information displays. This initiative is part of Aeropuertos Uruguay’s ongoing commitment to becoming increasingly inclusive and delivering a barrier-free travel experience for all passengers.

NaviLens is a pioneering signage technology that transforms any physical space into an intelligent, navigable environment. It is an orientation solution designed for people with visual impairments and international travelers, creating a fully accessible setting.

This collaboration marks a milestone in Uruguay’s airport infrastructure and positions Carrasco Airport as a benchmark in universal accessibility within the aviation industry.

The system operates through colored codes placed throughout the airport, which mobile devices can detect from up to 15 meters away — even while in motion and without the need to focus directly on them.

Through the free “NaviLens GO” app, the technology reads the information embedded in the physical code and delivers audio guidance with location-specific details. In addition, the integrated wayfinding solution guides users step by step to their next destination point.

Thanks to this technology, passengers can independently access essential information throughout their airport journey.

Content is available in 41 languages, eliminating language barriers and ensuring signage is understandable for all travelers.

“We are proud to introduce this new, state-of-the-art solution, reinforcing Aeropuertos Uruguay’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. We want all our passengers to always enjoy the best possible travel experience,” said Federico Cabrera, Operations and Experience Manager at Aeropuertos Uruguay.

The first phase of the project — serving as a proof of concept — includes the installation of 46 NaviLens codes strategically located in key areas of the terminal, including public Arrivals and Departures areas and the Boarding zone. These codes provide users with location details and information about available services. Following this initial phase, the system is expected to expand across all terminal areas.

“The implementation of NaviLens at Carrasco International Airport represents a key step in our mission to advance universal accessibility through technological innovation. At NaviLens, we place users at the center of our strategy to remove barriers and enhance the travel experience for all passengers, even overcoming language challenges. This pioneering project in air transport not only strengthens autonomy for people with disabilities but also establishes Carrasco Airport as a leader in innovation, social sustainability, and inclusive tourism,” said Lorenzo Campos, CEO of NaviLens.

The project at Carrasco Airport marks one of the Spanish technology company’s first initiatives in Latin America and its first step into the regional market. NaviLens has already been adopted in major global transport systems such as the New York, Madrid, Barcelona, London, and Melbourne metro networks, among others.

Through initiatives like this, Carrasco International Airport reinforces its position as a leader in innovation, sustainability, and inclusive tourism.
